Little Buffs Research Garden provides unique research opportunities for Stanley County Elementary School students (a.k.a. Fort Pierre Butterfly Garden)

By Jody Heemstra  Aug 13, 2025 | 12:49 PM

Stanley County Elementary School students will have new opportunities to learn about research thanks to a small, outdoor space in the alley just east of the elementary school building (on the back side of the Magpie’s building).

4th and 5th Grade Science Teacher Kristi Maher organized the efforts behind the Little Buffs Research Garden. Maher says one type of milkweed grows East River and the other type grows West River.  Maher says Stanley County students will also be doing their own research projects.  Maher says about half-a-dozen people were instrumental in creating the Research Garden.

In total, Maher says more than 70 people have helped in some way with the creation of the project. The plan is to have some sort of seating so students can use the space to read, work on homework or relax.

The public is also welcome to enjoy the Little Buffs Research Garden, but is asked to not interfere with any of the research projects.
